We undertook three major consultancy and project management assignments associated with the GIS and mapping industry.
During this time we observed that there was a major, and increasing, need for high quality digital mapping data.
Thus, starting in 1992, we formulated a business strategy and developed the necessary plans for setting up such an organisation.
It quickly became clear that we had to aim at the international market; that quality and delivery were to be key differentiators; and that we would require a low cost base.
In 1993 we put our plans into practice: we set up Geo Strategies Ltd in the UK, and
Geo Strategies SA in Romania to serve as the production unit, all with the benign support of our major geographic client -
Laser-Scan (now
Yeoman) of Cambridge.
History speaks for itself: since 1993, the requirement for digital mapping data has "exploded" - for GSM radio planning, for in-car navigation, for GIS marketing activities, and for the myriad of applications related to e-commerce.
In fact we predict that
LBS (location based services) and p-commerce (commerce based on position) will become a significant sub-set of e-commerce over the next few years.
To meet this demand, Geo Strategies expanded rapidly and we now have customers in 16 countries; we have produced digital geographic data for
over 60 countries; and, according to the World Bank, we are now the largest independent GIS and mapping company in Central & Eastern Europe.
This has been one of our most successful assignments covering the whole spectrum of business planning, project management, locum management, consultancy,
and training.
